Making a difference...
One life at a time...
Featured Pet - Cocoa
“After 7 years in a shelter. I am ready to retire to a good home with a loving family.”
Here is my story: I was born in August 1996.
(Hmm…that makes me 12 years old, but I still have a lot of love for humans.) You see, I have been at the shelter in Simpsonville S.C. (Concerned Citizens For Animals) since March 2001. My owners moved away, and just left me at home by myself. I love the shelter, the caretaker Ben, and all the volunteers are really good to me, but I would really “LOVE” a real home of my own. I know I am special, and I probably haven’t been adopted because most humans seem to want a younger dog, not realizing that we all get better with age. I can only imagine what it would be like to be in a real home with a family, a real bed, TV, a big back yard to just lay around in, and enjoy life: perhaps a little less barking. (Mmm…that sounds good.) All the shelter volunteers, and employees are really trying to find me a home, I have even been on local TV. I love people and children “ALOT”, but I am “NOT” really good with other dogs or cats. The way I see it, I’m old and I deserve a home of my own. I have a touch of arthritis and have to have meds for that, but I am up to date on all my shots, micro-chipped, on heartworm preventive, and have been spayed . I am a beautiful Rotti mix with lots of love and wisdom to share with a home that will give me a chance.

Who We Are
Founded in 1980, Concerned Citizens for Animals (CCA) is a non-profit, 501c(3) animal shelter/rescue group dedicated to promoting animal welfare and eliminating pet overpopulation in Upstate South Carolina.
Mission Statement
CCA shall not destroy any animal unless it is beyond medical care, and suffering would be the permanent result of medical treatment.
CCA shall operate an animal shelter for abandoned, sick, injured or homeless animals.
CCA shall maintain an adoption program to permanently place homeless animals in qualified homes.
CCA shall maintain a low-cost spay/neuter program for the community.
CCA shall strive to prevent to stop any abuse, neglect, or otherwise inhumane treatment of an animal.
Adoptions
CCA has an extensive application process which insures the best possible placement for a pet into a new “forever” home. The adoption process is thorough and includes a required written application, a phone interview with an adoptions team member, personal & vet reference checks, as well as a home visit to assure the best possible fit for the adoption. We have found that this process helps to ensure that the human and animal family members are happy in their new lives together.
Volunteer Opportunities
The success of CCA’s events and activities is attributable to our active volunteer base that keeps the organization strong. Volunteer opportunities include:
- Adoption Events
- Assisting at the shelter
- Fund Raising

Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program
Pet overpopulation is at epidemic proportions in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of animals are destroyed annually in shelters across country. The root cause of overpopulation is the existence of hundreds of thousands of unaltered pets. The cost of spaying or neutering a pet can be cost prohibitive to many pet owners.
CCA believes that the solution to the pet overpopulation problem lies in responsible ownership and spaying or neutering of pets. Consequently, the organization maintains a Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program to make the expense of the surgery affordable for more pet owners. With the support of our active, caring veterinary partners, CCA provides certificates for the spaying or neutering to the public for a minimal fee. You can download an application for low-cost spay/neuter at www.ccaweb.org.
Feral Cat Colony Management
The problem of feral cat overpopulation is prevalent in the Upstate. Cats that are left to fend for themselves will quickly multiply into large colonies, if management measures are not taken.
CCA works with the public to trap and spay or neuter and return feral cats to a safe environment. Caring volunteers assist with this process, and often entire colonies are moved to a new and safer location. Human “colony managers” assure that the felines are fed, watered and monitor the colony to assure the safety and health of the cats.
Oftentimes, the offspring of feral cats can be captured, socialized and become part of CCA’s selection of adoptable cats looking for their forever home.
Humane Education
CCA strives to provide programs to educate the public on responsible pet ownership. We work with other upstate organizations to provide information to the public which will promote animal safety and welfare.
Memorials & Perpetual Care Pet Cemetary
Memorials
To remember those we have loved and have lost, you may consider making a donation in your loved one’s memory. CCA welcomes these memorials and will ensure your loved one is remembered in CCA’s quarterly newsletter, PawPrints.
Perpetual Care Pet Cemetery
The loss of a pet can be a difficult time, especially since our pets become like family to us. CCA can help provide a resting place for your pet in our Perpetual Care Pet Cemetery. Included in this service CCA will provide the site, the burial arrangements, an engraved marker, and a memorial certificate.
Engraved Bricks:
As a remembrance of loved ones or as a memorial for either human or animal, CCA’s shelter has a special courtyard paved with bricks. Anyone can purchase a brick to be engraved with their choice of inscription. Not only does the engraved brick program help us thank and remember those we care about, but it also helps support CCA’s shelter program ($40).
